After lunch, Ivan gave an inspiring presentation about our artisans in India and how the organization there is growing and creating change! We were overjoyed to hear that through that organization, our talented, hard-working artisans in India are receiving healthy home conditions, medical care, and education.
We heard amazing testimonials about women empowering themselves while beauty and hope are blooming from desperate situations. One young woman, 20 years of age, was able to send herself to school and graduate because she creates and weaves fair trade jewelry. She knew what she wanted her future to look like and worked to get there! We are so incredibly proud!
Through his experiences, Ivan confirmed what we at Trades of Hope believe: that when giving a woman the opportunity to work herself out of poverty, she will use the income to improve the conditions of her family. She will put dinner on the table, provide a healthy home, form a savings account, and educate her children. In a lot of cases, a man will not use his income in such a selfless way. Ivan shared that he sees sustainable business taking women out of destitute, slums, and extreme poverty; and he sees it affecting their children in a positive light. It is truly a multi-generational solution.
Fair trade needs to continue to grow however, for us to see the change that we are working to see says Ivan. Passionately, Ivan encourages us all to advocate fair trade. We are to speak up, be a voice, and never grow quiet about this concept of empowerment!
