CHARINA* WALKED SILENTLY along a dim street in the Philippines, a routine she knew all too well.
A group of pimps had controlled her for two years—ever since she was 13—and tonight they had arranged another “customer” at a nearby hotel. They profited over and over from her innocent looks. By now, their violence taught her not to resist.
Charina tried to look tough on the outside, but inside she was miserable, scared and hurting. As she and four other girls walked to that dingy hotel, she felt completely alone.
SHE HAD NO IDEA someone knew her name and her story—and that rescue was on the way.
Charina arrived at the cheap hotel--but the “customer” inside was actually an undercover police officer working with International Justice Mission to free the girls. Once the “sale” was completed, police moved in immediately to arrest the three pimps and bring Charina and the other girls to safety.
CHARINA WAS FINALLY FREE, but she was overwhelmed by the flashing lights and commotion around her. Everything she knew was suddenly turned upside down.
International Justice Mission social workers stayed right by Charina’s side as she shared her story with the police at the station and verified her age, and we found the girls a safe place to sleep on their first night in freedom.
After helping to rescue Charina from those years of abuse, we made the commitment she desperately wanted to hear: You will never have to feel alone again.
CHARINA'S STORY DOESN'T END HERE. On the night of rescue, she was 15 years old, three months pregnant and addicted to drugs. She is now free and experiencing healing through International Justice Mission and through your purchases!
