Coming from a low-income household, Chandana faced many hardships in her childhood. She had to drop out of school at a young age to help her family work in the fields. It was hard work for a young girl. She married early and settled into her new role as a wife, hoping to raise a family someday.
Years passed, and Chandana still longed to become a mother. She finally learned she was unable to bear children. After recognizing a need, she decided to adopt her her brother's son. She was happy to help, and also to fulfill her maternal desire. Sadly, that happiness was short lived when she suddenly lost her nephew due to illness. The heartbreak and shock of losing him sent her into depression.
A woman from her community told her about artisan work where she could learn to sew, to help keep her mind occupied. She enjoyed the busyness of the work and was a quick learner, soon mastering all the tailoring skills. With this new work, she enjoyed meeting new friends who helped her overcome her depression to become a very confident person. She is now happy to be contributing financially to the family income.
In the process of helping herself through a dark point in her life, Chandana found light and happiness again. She is very thankful for the opportunity to create products for Trades of Hope that will bring joy to other children around the world.
Chandana has been working as an artisan for 18 years now and has no plans to stop. She says of her job, "The orders from Trades of Hope have definitely made an impact on my life and all the women I work with. This has created a marked improvement in our (artisans') quality of life."
Trades of Hope works with women like yourself to impact the lives of artisans like Chandana all around the world. This backpack perfectly symbolizes how the dark clouds in her past have been transformed into a brighter, happier future.
